My Admissions Essay

I really need help with this, and with all the English-y people in our class, hopefully you can all help me out a lot.

I'm not all that English-y as is witnessed by my artsy-fartsy narrative that not everyone can appreciate, but I will do my best to assist you. :) I have read through your reasons for wanting to be an immigration lawyer and why you enjoy accounting and think perhaps you should write about how your passion and logic will make you a good lawyer. It seems to me that your passion will motivate you and your logic will enhance your passion by giving you the ability to focus on the p's and q's of the law itself and make it work for your clients. So, perhaps try writing from that perspective and if you need feedback or help don't hesitate to email me - Sarah Mae (smae5160@yahoo.com)

Okay, so I guess you all know by now that I really really really want to be a lawyer.

Part of the admissions section requires me to write a personal statement.

The prompt is "Why do you want to be a lawyer?" Granted this is a fair question, it is also a very big, vague, open ended question. I'd rather have them ask me something that isn't this open ended but..it is their wish for me to do this and for now I am going to behave like the loyal minion they desire. :P

I began to think about this question..Why do I really want to be a Lawyer? I was thinking about this and I came to a strange circular conclusion. I want to be a Lawyer because I want to be a Lawyer. I mean nobody in my family is pushing me into this career path. Nobody in my family has been a lawyer. It just is something that I really want to do. (And besides Esquire sounds pretty darn cool :P)

I was thinking about what to write and somehow I don't think that writing "I want to be a lawyer because...I am stubborn and enjoy being right possibly too much."

When I talk to people about this the tend to ask me right away, so...what type of law would you like to do?

I would like to practice immigration law. Not only am I the child of an immigrant, I have helped people through the process of becoming a US Citizen. I really like helping people out. I hate sad people. I hate angry people. Immigration law makes people happy. My future clients would be receiving something that they greatly desire and that makes me happy. I speak Spanish (like almost everybody else here) thanks to my stern teachers. I think that I could do a good job at this too. Not only would I get to meet with people, I could also practice my Spanish.

Besides, I really love the poem written by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

and the poem by Gibran TO YOUNG AMERICANS OF SYRIAN ORIGIN

The next question tends to be...so why is my major Accounting, shouldn't it be like Political Science, International Business, or Spanish if I really do care about the language that much?

My answer is pretty weird so you may need to read this a couple of times and still think WTF but hold in there...as Caitlin said the first day, perhaps if you smoke something you will understand me better.

I like accounting because it is logical. It has rules to be followed generally, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Financial accounting is very aligned with GAAP. You follow these rules because these are the rules period and no complaints. There is times, however, where the accountant makes judgment calls. Managerial accounting is very much a common sense type of accounting. It deals with internal issues and thus is not regulated by GAAP. It is pretty much a free-for-all as long as you justify. The justification, required in both financial and managerial accounting, must be common sense, logical, and obviously justifiable. Like accounting, Law is regulated. This regulation, however, does have some areas which are very gray. In these gray areas, one can do anything so long as it is logical, common sense, and justifiable. I know, this really sounds cheesy but it is just what I feel is the truth.

I know that this is not right now in the necessary form that it should be for submission to the powers to be that determine my potential fate as future lawyer. I do need some advice and help. I should have about two pages written out. I am trying to figure out how to express exactly what I want to say to them.

Oh well, if you are still reading this then thanks, if not, then thanks for the effort, it is greatly appreciated.
