IDH4000 Rhetorics of Rhythm

For this assignment I could not decide whom would be best to talk to about rhythm. Since I was indecisive I went with convenience and chose my boyfriend Aaron. We were in the middle of a mind-numbingly awesome cartoon when I asked him if he would help me with this assignment, and he reluctantly obliged. So we moved from the comfy 20-year-old couch to the table, just to make it seem more serious I guess. We talked about rhythm and what we thought it to be, but not only was the conversation about rhythm, it was also rhythmic in itself. The conversation started thusly…

“Hey thanks for doing this with me, I figured you would be a good candidate to talk to about this rhythm assignment.”

“Yeah no prob, so what am I supposed to do?”

“Well I’m supposed to ask you what you think of when you think of rhythm. What does it immediately bring to mind?”

“Well, ummm..... I guess for me, it brings to mind band in high school, and Mr. H. screaming at us that were offbeat over and over. Those drum majors never know how to keep a steady beat!” (He said this sarcastically referring to me.)

“Well maybe I could keep a steady beat if the percussion ever paid attention to me! Its funny though, marching band was the first thing that came to mind for me too when we started talking about this assignment in class.

“Well yeah, I mean, band and music was our “thing” so naturally when presented with the question of what is rhythm you are going to initially think of musical rhythm.”

-The conversation went on with me asking him similar questions about his ideas of rhythm and replying to his response with my own response to the same question, and that seemed to be the rhythm of our conversation.

-Later in the conversation I mentioned that when I think of rhythm, for some odd reason, the first thing I think of is the most monotonous musical rhythm in the world, which is pomp and circumstance (the graduation song). Then he and I reminisced about how much it sucked having to play this in middle school and high school for every graduation for hours and hours until the ceremony was done.

-I hope this blog makes sense and is kinda along the lines of what he wanted out of the assignment….if not please feel free to let me know (I could use all the help I can get)!
