Week Ten, Blog One: Proposal

 

Function:

 

Extract the conceptual framework undergirding disjunct and digressive post-modern rhetoric; the logic of post-modern thought, sans the bullsh*t.

 

Form:

 

A cut-to-sh*t chopped composition providing the (narrated) sonic landscape within which a visual manifestation of the aforementioned explication shall flicker.

 

Responsibilities:

 

David and Kevin will provide the software. David, Cory, Kevin, and Kris will map out the explication (storyboard style) as well as extract the imagery. Cory and anyone else interested will remix the track. David, Cory, Kevin, and Kris will polish the final form. Cory may provide/create the space.

 

Space:

 

Reflecting form, comfort will parallel discomfort. Get comfortable.

 

Put differently (for anyone interested in working this project, or something like it):

 

The impetus for this project is the realization that some people in intellectual circles, quite frankly, are full of sh*t (and an emerging ethnological study of pretense). It would be easy to dismiss their rhetoric as simply not worthy of my time, but a more sophisticated analysis reveals that many of these individuals are not wittingly "full of sh*t," but are products of a culture that fosters what appears to me as an elitist, separatist, and to some extent pointless rhetoric of word play (also known as theory) in myriad intellectual fields. While perhaps not the most inundated with this rhetoric, postmodernism does seem to have had the greatest effect on mainstream culture, and this, I believe, is a shame, for the implications of postmodern thought are often misunderstood (mostly the fault of the movements "theoreticians"), and the actual ramifications of the what is considered a post-modern infusion into practical life has been disappointing (and sometimes bizarre). I am not a detractor of postmodern theory in the sense that I don’t agree with its (standard) tenets, but rather I find its tenets hardly “post” modern and the verbose productions put on by its founders both obnoxious and telling.

 

We can broaden the scope of the project. We can all together change it. Whatever.

 

In the meantime, I’ve got a track in mind that I would like to cut up a bit (loop a few sections, repeat a few sections, work with it so that it is appropriate). I have it on me at all times. Ask and you can listen. It has a trance vibe and, if loud enough, it can make you physically ill (as loud music can do). Lyrically, it speaks on some of what we have discussed during the semester, and some of what I have discussed here. So, I propose cutting the lights completely and projecting a film (of sorts) that does the same. I would like it to flicker, though I’m not sure what the effect will be and whether it will follow the film’s lead or simply add to the discomfort that I seek.

 

I think that’s a bit clearer (the original proposal was just notes I’d jotted down during class some weeks earlier), and I think it will be even clearer once those who are interested listen to the track.

 

Cory, hit me up with this track today in class if I make it. I'd like to see what you're talking about. Perhaps try to find other songs/lyrics that represent what it is you're trying to convey? I'm not quite sure how I'll input into this proposal, but it seems like a good idea. .:Kris:.

Sounds great, a strong intervention, it will work, music and techniques of rhythm simplify (cf rhythmic entrainment) complex n-formations and displace philosophical/theoretical discourse, shift from semantics to pragmatics, yes, aye.
