My initial inclination was to place my work in the public domain. I'm not sure that I'm at all concerned with how what I create in this course is used. But, inasmuch as I'm uncertain, I opted for the next least restrictive.

The impetus for this decision was the closing moments of "Royalty" by Gang Starr where an unidentified man (I think it's DJ Premier) closes with a soliloquy about the problems with snitches in hip-hop, in particular those who anonymously "blow up" other artists for sampling sounds from previously recorded tracks. He talks about sampling as an integral tool in hip-hop compositions, and implies that sampling is essentially instrumentation.

And, this idea is reflected in the work of most contemporary visual artists, with different mediums (in some cases, full pieces) being sampled for original works. I think this fairly well illustrates the separation between the art and the object (or sound, or what have you).

I suppose the underlying reasoning for my decision here is as follows:

I do not wish to gain credit of any nature from my artistic work.

I am wholly comfortable with others using my artistic work in any way they might wish.

I believe my work here (with this wiki) will be artistic.

Therefore, I do not wish to gain credit for my work here.

This, though, is based on chronic uncertainty about the direction of the course.
