Week One, Blog Two: The Transciption Process
I’ll assume that we’re including the interview itself as part of the transcription process (I don’t imagine anyone wants to know much about how I listened to overlapping bits of my conversation and transcribed them to a word document).
After a drawn out fight with my girlfriend over who I was and was not allowed to speak to (on a friendly level), I remembered this assignment and asked if she would let me interview her. She agreed, and I logged on to the wiki so that I could review the parameters. I immediately realized this was going to be a difficult impromptu interview, considering all we had to work with was “conversation about rhythm” and a couple of suggested ice breakers. Nonetheless, I dusted off the old Venturer karaoke machine (with cassette recorder), plugged the mic in, and pressed record.
Surprisingly, the recording had only one moment of dead air (early in the interview). It was a bit clumsy at the start, but I think it began to compose itself midway through.
I think had we spent some time on this topic prior to the interview; that is, if we were better versed on ideas of rhythm, particularly in contexts outside of music (although that would seem to be fundamental), the discourse may have been a bit more compelling.
Transcribing it to a word document was tedious. There’s really nothing more to say about that.
As an aside, I think my girlfriend was a good sport for taking the interview, all things considered.
