Week Five, Blog Three: Keep Your Elbows off the Table! or Get off the Damn Phone!

 

 

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - pressure on the ulnar nerve causing tingling and numbness in the pinky finger, ring finger, and the palm just below these two fingers

Causes -

 

  • repeated bending and straightening of the elbow
  • leaning or resting on the elbow for extended periods
  • a direct hit on the cubital tunnel

Symptoms -

 

  • numbness and tingling (as described)
  • tenderness in the elbow
  • loss of grip strength and fine dexterity
  • muscle atrophy and abduction of the pinky and ring fingers

 

Treatments -

 

Non-operative

  • anti-inflammatory medications
  • splinting the elbow while sleeping
  • modifying behavior so that elbow flexion is limited

Surgical

 

Moral -

 

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - I've got it, and you don't want it!
