Week Eight Blogs
Blog 1: 3-1-07 After yesterdays seminar I had a much more concrete idea of how to go about putting together my definitional statement. I am combining three different "cuts" that I found while scanning our wiki. They include 'artistic freedom', 'existing order' and 'renewal'. I think it is going to be an interesting investigatory process based on these three elements. For me, although artistic freedom is paramount, I believe it needs to be tempered in order to not leave others feeling violated by our own creative process...but, more on that in my definition.
On another note, I am looking forward to hearing about studio 620 after Cory and Trey check it out. Group three has big plans (pun intended - explanation will follow in the coming weeks) and we are excited about the possibilities the studio will provide!
Blog 2: 3-2-07 As I surf our wiki I have to admit, I continue to be awe-struck by those of you for whom the written word comes so easily. I consider myself an articulate person but must confess that I feel like a very small figure walking among giants in this class at times. The level of verbosity astounds me and the rhetorical abilities many of you possess threaten to overwhelm me.
Writing is something I have done for so long, not out of a love of doing it, but a need to. In business, as I have mentioned before, writing is reserved for issues that must be put into concrete terms for clients, employees, or campaigns. It is utilitarian not artistic. As a result it becomes something one must do, not something one enjoys doing. With that said, I must say, that although writing in this space can be intimidating I also find it inspiring as my peers continue to raise the bar for me. Thanks to all of you who continue to write prolifically and well. It is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.
Blog 3: 3-6-07 This definition seems to have gotten wayyyyy too complicated. But then perhaps I have a tendancy to make it that way. Visual presentation is really important to me and I want it to be really dynamic, with visuals, links, color and the like.
I am happy with how it is all coming together but am off to the bookstore to close tonight so the midnight deadline is looming largely. I spent a lot of time researching my points, finding visuals & quotes and formatting my pages etc....I'm sure it will all come together - I'm just tired and a bit stressed right now.
P.S. I am going to do my best to tighten up my definition - post work now - 10:48 pm.... well, it's 12:05 pm and I have completed my definition to the best of my ability and am looking forward to getting feedback about how I can improve it. I'm sure it need to be polished up a bit...nothing is ever really final!
Blog 4: 3-7-07 It is too early in the morning to write but I find myself possessed to do so. Writing the definition assignment proved challenging for me. Perhaps I approached it too seriously. I admire so many of you for being able to simply write. I think I spend too much time thinking about writing and not enough time doing it. I am a planner first, then a doer. It's a system that has worked for me and one that is hard to back away from but hopefully, with your help I will be able to - at least a bit.
I look forward to a time when I don't feel my heart pounding out of my chest when someone suggests that I need to write about it. If I could draw every time I face an assignment that deals with words or telling a story I would be much less stressed by it. I am a visual learner so Perhaps its just a matter of thinking of letters and words as visual art. Maybe then I will be able to write more prolifically. I suppose the most important thing is to do it. Just write. Words on the page, filling space, flowing freely. Practice does make perfect and isn't perfect everyone's goal?
