On any ordinary basis, I wouldn't have had a problem with jumping right into the chaos and voicing my opinion about this or that, but this time I didn't know how to jump in or contribute aside from my mere interjections of realistic pessimism. How does one break the rhythm of several and contribute enough to keep the harmony? How is it that one person would say something and without any conflict, the next person would respond just as seamlessly as woven fabric? I think what I'm trying to say is that I'm amazed at how unorganized and chaotic the class it, but really how structured it turns out to be when things get going.--Kris
What I'm really trying to say and what I should have said long ago when I was trying to determine what or how to interject into this class was/is just f*ckin do it. If you really look at this class on a paper and trace our movements, it would be as if we are watching a turd surge through drainage pipes in an underdeveloped country on its way to an unknown destination. If you don't speak up or try to input your two cents while there is still time, you're going to get run over and left in a phenomena of confusion. Most importantly of remixing what I've said before and how I would of worded it in present day is the "seamless transition between individuals." On contrary, I think there are only seamless transisitions between much of our conversations because no one wants to get invovled in an elongated and almost painful debate that David and Trey got into or between David and Cory... Instead, they just nod their heads in acknowledgement like they think they know what the f*ck just happened, but in reality haven't been paying attention for half an hour. [Insert: This is why I only interject when I actually know or think I can contribute to the conversations....and not because I don't want to contribute.]
The emphasis of Trey forcing us to find a pattern...to find rhythms amongst these interactions. But life really is just random collisions...and this honors seminar a forced collision. I would not have talked to most of these people that I have formed some sort of bond with.....Which we are made to believe that we are being taught to think outside the box but thats not really the case at all. And the moment we are actually given the freedom to do something outside of the box, we complain and insist on parameters. As honors students I would hope that we could exist without those limitations. We should act like the leaders of tomorrow that we are and make our own rules with common sense and moral decency. I don't know what is going on because I didn't see you guys last Tuesday. I didn't see the little black text at the top of my logo until lastnight and at that point it was kind of irrelevant. .:Kris:.
Yeah...bad timing. Well, basically Kevin decided he wanted to do a PP presentation, and I didn't have any better ideas considering the time we had available to work and/or collaborate, so I agreed. I asked him to contact you on the wiki. He said there wasn't any contact info (e.g. email address) and dropped his number on your homepage. In any event, he asked me to send him PP slides derived from my notes. He should have his own slides prepared as well. He should be able to format the slides so that they are on the same template. If you're not down with that at this point, we can strip the PP presentation to basic anchors from within the text and just sort of bounce back and forth between the various key concepts. I remember vaguely about his whole presentation thing, but I don't know how that is going to go with the book. All I'm mainly doing is pulling what gutters and things I found interesting/ambigious. There was an email list on the Class Roster Page, but I guess he missed that one. It is purely up to you, I'll interject and input my thoughts where I feel able. .:Kris:. Thoughts?
Well. I guess the important question is did you finish the book? If so, we should be fine. My suspicion is that Kevin did not, because he seemed to be on page 60 or so for the last two weeks...every time I spoke with him, it was page 60. I would like to organize the presentation topically, rather than mirroring the chapters and reading down an outline. My notes reference page numbers and so will my slides (which I'm working on as I type this). I guess presenting the topics in the order they appeared in the book is fine, and the referenced bullets will just jump around the book. That should make things easy, I think. So? - Cory
I've read most of the book, but whether or not I comprehend what was said is another question. My question is, are there really chapters or just a collage of verbage? I do know that I don't have slides and will not have time on such a short notice/communication since I'm currently at work jumping back and worth to the wiki. Well, again, I think you'll be fine, so long as you've read (and you have). Don't worry about the slides. If I don't get in contact with Kevin (I've called him three times this morning) to confirm that he still wants these slides, then the presentation might be a little rocky, though. I think I've got sh#t organized well enough in my head to allow us to freestyle should Kevin not come through with the PP. I suppose I can do it, actually. But, I'll wait an hour. Of course we should have gotten together sooner. I didn't finish the book until yesterday, though, and Kevin never made contact with you to discuss the presentation. Sh#t happens, I guess. What exactly don't you understand? Tell me if these are meaningful to you: The Idiot, Rhythm Science, The Re-mix (sampling, the changing same, Emerson, Phonography, etc.), The Cut, Multiplex Consciousness (Identity). - Cory
What bothers me most about the book is it is a book of metaphors. I don't know if you remember or not, but I tend to dislike the association of one thing to another when a shorter path of directness could have been taken. Most of those ring bells, just not to the depth at to which they probably should. .:Kris:.
The book is a compilation of essays and new sh#t for continuity, I think (to answer the question I missed about chapters). The Mix, sampling, etc. as they relate to what he's calling rhythm science are repeated throughout the text. For such a little book, its pretty dense (reminds me of On Liberty in that way). I can't say I understand everything he's getting at either, particularly at those times when he sort of asks the reader if they're getting it. But, I think I've got ahold of the themes I've mentioned, and I imagine that if you understand what he says about them and how he references them, we should work well together. He definitely utilizes metaphor, but the comparisons I recall seem pretty straightfoward (perhaps I've forgetten the complex ones). So, the topical PP format is fine with you? - Cory

I just received Kevin's PP presentation (he emailed it earlier - I was unaware). I also just talked with him, and he said he wants to tweak it a bit (which is a good thing, because it is kind of sparse as it is and I honestly don't know where the quotes he chose originated, or why he chose them). We're going to talk again at 10:50 to straighten sh#t out and hopefully agree on a format, because I'm not sure what he's trying to do with the PP he's created. It's got a weird template too...a beach ball, pail, and shovel. Anyway, it will be proper in time for class. See you there. - Cory
