This is a conversation I had with my sister. She is a journalism major and I thought she would be the best to help me with this.
cynthiaswift02 (10:15:38 PM): hi
JJBop21 (10:15:50 PM): so what are we going to talk about?
cynthiaswift02 (10:16:05 PM): I thought you wanted to talk about rhythm
JJBop21 (10:16:19 PM): yes, but what about rhythm
cynthiaswift02 (10:16:37 PM): well, I don't know, it's your project
JJBop21 (10:16:55 PM): well what do you think of when you think of rhythm
cynthiaswift02 (10:17:31 PM): well, we have been joking about song lyrics, but it also makes me think of dancing, and of the rhythm in poetry
cynthiaswift02 (10:17:37 PM): like meter and stuff
cynthiaswift02 (10:19:13 PM): I guess rhythm in general makes me think of pacing or something similar to tempo I suppose
JJBop21 (10:20:07 PM): the only thing I can think of is 'I don't feel like dancing' by the Scissors Sisters
JJBop21 (10:20:24 PM): This has nothing to do with rhythm
cynthiaswift02 (10:20:38 PM): wow, you are even more off the target than I am
cynthiaswift02 (10:20:43 PM): I no longer feel in the dark
JJBop21 (10:20:55 PM): I know, I don't really know what to talk about
cynthiaswift02 (10:21:34 PM): let me see if I can find a definition of what rhythm is I guess
cynthiaswift02 (10:23:32 PM): okay, there are a few things that I found
cynthiaswift02 (10:23:40 PM): the first refers to a cycle
cynthiaswift02 (10:23:45 PM): it says, "an interval during which a recurring sequence of events occurs)"
cynthiaswift02 (10:24:04 PM): the next talks about rhythm in regards to a beat, like in music
cynthiaswift02 (10:24:20 PM): it says, "The basic rhythmic unit in a piece of music"
JJBop21 (10:24:32 PM): but he wants more of the rhythm with writing
JJBop21 (10:24:40 PM): rhythm in music is easy
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:00 PM): the next is the one that I thought of, which is rhythm in poetry
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:03 PM): I was getting to that
JJBop21 (10:25:18 PM): and I can see rhythm poetry but he was talking about everyday conversation
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:33 PM): well, it refers to rhythm with words
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:37 PM): so we are getting closer
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:41 PM): it says, "(the arrangement of spoken words alternating stressed and unstressed elements"
cynthiaswift02 (10:25:53 PM): so, I guess it’s what parts of the conversations are stressed or not
cynthiaswift02 (10:26:01 PM): which might be harder to see with IMs
cynthiaswift02 (10:26:08 PM): however, that’s what cap locks are for
JJBop21 (10:26:33 PM): IM do have an interesting rhythm of their own
cynthiaswift02 (10:27:17 PM): but yea, I can understand how if the stresses on particular words are changed then the whole meaning is changed....it’s the same thing when you capitalize different words in an IM, it changes the whole sentence
cynthiaswift02 (10:27:27 PM): I wish I could think of an example off hand
JJBop21 (10:27:44 PM): I help my uncle jack off the horse
JJBop21 (10:27:50 PM): it is a classic!!
cynthiaswift02 (10:28:05 PM): what?
cynthiaswift02 (10:28:33 PM): oh, I help my uncle Jack off ....the horse
JJBop21 (10:28:42 PM): you can have Uncle Jack off the horse
cynthiaswift02 (10:28:45 PM): or, I help my uncle jack....off the horse
JJBop21 (10:29:12 PM): yup, I remember it from high school
cynthiaswift02 (10:29:28 PM): I guess depending on what part you stressed, it means a lot of different things
JJBop21 (10:29:34 PM): yup
cynthiaswift02 (10:30:41 PM): so, depending on the way you say something it can then change the whole conversation, or the rhythm of it
JJBop21 (10:32:10 PM): yes and minus the caps, IM's lose most of the inflection normal conversations have
cynthiaswift02 (10:33:09 PM): they do!
cynthiaswift02 (10:33:35 PM): my boyfriend thought I was trying to fight with him last night because he didn’t hear the way I would have said the words
cynthiaswift02 (10:33:58 PM): it happens quite often in IM conversations
JJBop21 (10:34:21 PM): I can't count the number of times, I was joking with someone and they got up tight because they couldn't tell I was laughing
cynthiaswift02 (10:35:27 PM): right, that happens quite often
cynthiaswift02 (10:35:58 PM): so I guess though we don’t think about it, rhythm plays a big part in conversation
JJBop21 (10:36:17 PM): I guess so, I never really thought about it before
cynthiaswift02 (10:37:07 PM): me neither, that’s interesting
JJBop21 (10:39:27 PM): well I guess this is good enough
cynthiaswift02 (10:40:44 PM): well, awesome....I'm glad I could be of help
